Munk, Solomon
(1803-67)
   French orientalist. He was born in Glogau, Silesia. He settled in Paris in 1828, where he took charge of Semitic manuscripts at the Bibliotheque Nationale. In 1840 he joined the delegation to Egypt led by Sir Moses Montefiore and Isaac-Adolphe Cremieux, and intervened in the Damascus Affair. He became blind in 1850, but was nevertheless appointed professor of Hebrew and Syriac literature at the College de France in 1864. His writings include studies of Hebrew and Arabic literature of the Golden Age of Spain, as well as an edition of the Arabic text of Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed.
